How to choose the right sunglasses?

Many people mistakenly believe that wearing sunglasses is for the sake of aesthetics, fashion, and being cool, but in fact, the most important function of sunglasses is to block UV damage.

Ultraviolet (UV) is an electromagnetic wave with a wavelength of 100-400nm (nanometers), divided into three types: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA damage reaching the dermis can cause skin blackening, leading to eye cataracts and pterygium; UVB damage can cause skin peeling, leading to punctate keratitis in the eyes, etc; UVC damage can lead to skin cancer and retinal macular damage, leading to macular degeneration. Most ultraviolet UVC is absorbed when passing through the atmosphere, and UVA and UVB are important factors causing damage to human eye tissue.

Sunglasses can protect the eyes from UV damage, but choosing the wrong sunglasses or using them incorrectly can harm the eyes!

Choose Sunglasses Standard

  1. Equipped with UV resistant markings

UV protection is the primary function of sunglasses. If you wear inferior sunglasses that cannot block UV rays, it is more likely to cause eye damage. Over time, it can lead to cataracts, eye pain, corneal edema, corneal epithelial detachment, and other symptoms. When purchasing sunglasses, it is necessary to check if there are signs such as “UV resistant”, “UV400”, and “UV resistant” on the lenses or packaging.

  1. Choose lenses with medium color depth such as gray, tan, and green

The selection of lens color should be based on the principle of clear edges of the object being viewed and the ability to effectively identify signal lights of different colors. Gray, brown, and green lenses have better absorption of infrared and ultraviolet rays. Lenses are generally recommended for medium color depth. If a strong shading effect is required, darker colored lenses should be chosen.

  1. Selection of sunglasses with different protective functions

(1) Stained lenses

Tan color scheme: The color is soft and comfortable, suitable for driving and weather conditions such as dust and fog.

Grey series: relatively neutral lenses, suitable for driving and outdoor outings.

Green color: suitable for people with easily fatigued eyes, can be used indoors and outdoors.

Mercury series: With the function of reflecting visible light, it is suitable for people who have been outdoors for a long time, such as outdoor sports and mountaineering.

Blue color: Not recommended for daily use.

Yellow color: It can improve contrast and provide more accurate visuals, suitable for nighttime activities.

(2) Polarizing lens

By utilizing the directional nature of light fluctuations and propagation, the dazzling light caused by various factors is filtered out, thereby blocking ultraviolet rays and improving visual quality, making the surrounding scenery appear clear and not dazzling. Polarized lenses are extremely light, thin, and impact resistant, making them perfect for driving and outdoor activities. Polarizers can reduce strong and stray light, reduce glare caused by diffuse reflections on road or water surfaces, and improve visual clarity. They are suitable for outdoor activities such as fishing, driving, and sailing. (3) Color changing lenses
